FDA Approved Treatments For Macular Degeneration

Laser Photocoagulation-is a treatment for wet macular degeneration. In this procedure a laser is used to destroy or to seal off newly developing blood vessels. This prevents the leakage of blood and fluid. This procedure is no longer used with any regularity due to the scarring in the eye caused by the treatment. The scars caused additional blind spots in the patients vision. Phytodynamic Therapy- is also a treatment for wet macular degeneration. In this treatment the patient is injected with a drug called Visudyne. macular degeneration treatment The drug, which destroys the new blood vessels formed by macular degeneration, is activated by non-thermal laser. The laser is shined into the eye and the drug reacts to the light when it passes through the new blood vessels. The treatment has led to improved vision in a small number of cases and to a slowdown to the degeneration in a large percentage of cases.
