Age Related Macular Degeneration: Experimental and Non-FDA approved Treatments

There are a number of treatments that are either in a developmental phase or are not approved by the FDA. Treatment options that are not FDA approved are not available to the general public or are not performed in the United States. There are a number of drug therapies in clinical trials. Encapsulated Cell Technology, an investigational treatment, involves using genetically engineered cells and an implant to balance out cell loss in the eye. Other treatments in various developmental stages macular degeneration treatment include radiation therapies, surgeries, and a blood filtration treatment called RHEO. RHEO is available in Canada.
